Cancer Research Rock Nite

Spartan, On The Level and Arsenal of Freedom played a charity fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research Stanley / Consett and raised a whopping £300 thanks to all the support that you showed for the event .We would have liked to raise more but the weather was not on our side, snow showers and heavy rain had an adverse effect on the numbers that ventured out on Saturday 5Th April. All the bands played their hearts out for the event and we would like to say a big thanks you to all who took part.

SPARTAN  -  March On

Kev and Gazza have signed up to take part in the 11 mile Derwent Walk to raise funds for the bands local charity Cancer Research Stanley / Consett. After they completed the gig on April 5Th( full details on the Blog ) they decided to give a bit more time to help raise more funds/awareness for the charity. If you wish to show your support by sponsoring either of the 'terrible two' they will have their forms with them at all forth coming gigs. Even if you can only afford to give them £1 that will make a big difference to the charity as all of those £1 add up to a big total.

SPARTAN -  To support POWERAGE May 17th

We have just been asked to support local AC/DC tribute band POWERAGE at their gig on May 17th at Crook Town Football Club, we can't wait. It's gonna be a gig of MEGA proportions so don't forget to get along there for a night of Pure-rock-tainment.

Mick has finally got his new kit, a metallic red sparkle Dixon kit which he test drove on 5/1/08 at the flying horse, he thinks it.s the dog's dandlers and can't wait to get it to the next gig his drum solo was getting so long that the lads in Spartan were worried they would not get to play any of the second set, but we managed to tempt him off his kit to allow us to get on with the second set.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well it’s that time of the year when we all start to look back on what has been and look forward to what’s to come in the New Year. All the lads in Spartan have had a great year musically we have made and met new friends and have enjoyed all of the places we have played over the busy nine month period from when we started. We must say a real big thank you to everyone who has made the effort to catch us live and it’s a real buzz seeing some regular faces at every gig.

One of the highlights of the year must have been playing the 2 gigs for Cancer Research and being able to give something back to a charity that does so much and asks for so little, if you can’t think of a new year’s resolution then can we suggest one for you. Next year make a commitment to either attend a charity gig or if you can’t spare the time catch one of the lads at a gig and make a donation to the charity in person via all of Spartan.

The band always strives to give every show 100% and hopes that you have enjoyed the set and the work that goes into getting new songs to a certain standard to be aired at a new audience. We are currently working on a few new songs which we hope to be playing fully next year and have a list of about 20 that we would love to try. We hope to be able to play a lot more new venues next year and have secured some new gigs which we can’t wait to play at and can’t wait to get back to see you at your local venue.

Have a Rocking good Christmas and a Banging New Year

Here is a extract from the Evening Chronicle about the Stanley fun day.

Fun day,
Fundraiser

MUSICIANS will be getting together to raise funds for Cancer Research during a street party In County Durham. Bands will be performing at the annual free Stanley Fun Day on June 30, along with fairground‑style games and a talent show featuring local contestants. Among the entertainers will be local rock band Spartan, who are taking part after guitarist Garry Beavers wife was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. Status Quo tribute band On The Level will also be entertaining crowds at the fun day, which will take place along Clifford Road in Stanley town centre. All money raised from the day, which starts at 10.45am, will go to Cancer Research UK. Secretary for the Stanley branch, Jean Shipley said: "There Is plenty to see including performance from Sam's School of Dance and a tae kwon do display."

Following our gig on 29th June, we would like to say special thank you to On The Level for the use of their gear and the support to the Stanley Fun Day. We had a great time even when the heavens opened the crowd were still there give a mention to all the Spartan Army. Please email us any photos you have and we can add them to our photos page. Just to let you know, the band donated all the money they made from their t-shirt , cd's and badges sold on the day to Cancer Research, and the highlight of Kev's blog in between songs was when he promoted the poor soaking wet ladies selling their plants in the rain, we got a rousing shout and a wave from them as he told everyone to go and buy some recently watered plants due to the heavy rain that occurred when we were playing.

Here is a message from one of the organisers of the day! :-

Hope you've dried out (in any way you like) since your gig on Saturday at Stanley Fun Day for Cancer Research UK. What a day! There's something about a hot rock band, playing live jumping music, in the pouring rain. Very professional. We would like to thank you all for your help in making it a great day (raising £3,500 - more than in recent years, so you can take some of the credit for that). I'm a little concerned that you may have developed a fetish for turquoise plastic vests now, hmmm... Looking forward to the Rock Night on Friday 14th September, probably at the Hibernian in Stanley. I'll be in touch soon.
Luv to you all, Jean.

The band are currently hard in practice for the forth coming event at Stanley fun day. As they only have a limited time on stage they are trying to put together a set that will please everyone who might or might not have seen the band before. Garry has been up to his usual tricks over the last week or two and has increased his bass army by another 2 guitars, one of which is his new headless bass made in Germany which he is currently trying out before gigs to get a feel it before he uses it full time. He has also been helping Cancer Research in getting some much needed publicity for the Stanley event and they had an article printed in the Chronicle on Tuesday 12th June (page 14) and he has been in contact with the Northern Echo which hope to feature a couple of articles with regard to the event on June 30th.

The band would like to take the time to say a big thank you to all our new fans ,who have made us feels so welcome in the new venues we have played recently. We hope to be able to return to the venues we recently played but as you can see form the gig page we have a few booking to see to first and then we hope to return to see you all.

Spartan - on the move

Garry completed the walk for cancer research on May 13th and has with the generous sponsors managed to raise over £250 for the charity. The walk took him under 3hrs (mainly because he was told there was a bar at the end of it) the weather was good all day and there was a great atmosphere created by all the volunteers and walkers alike. After completing the walk Garry was driven at high speed to the bands practice (and didn't have to sit down till late on), due to the high turn out of walkers the charity hopes to exceed their previous total of £12,000 and the band has decided to ALL take part in next years event .
